Early caveman language lacked complexity: mostly gestures and sounds early on. Cave wall paintings filled in the gaps, thereby allowing them to better express the narrative. Modern art is still tuned in to this: storytelling.
Knowledge is the awareness or understanding. Wisdom is the ability to effectively apply that knowledge. Knowledge tells us how to start a fire, but wisdom warns us not to start a fire in a theater.
An art critic, artist, and art lover walk into a gallery and stroll to the first exhibit. The art critic, looking down his nose, is heard to say, "This piece could have been painted by one thousand monkeys painting at one thousand easels. Nay, one monkee at one easel. But in doing so, they did not create art." The artist responds with "Sir, I am that one monkey. What you see could not have been crafted by one or one thousand Monets." The art lover, not looking at the artwork but only focused on the other two, cast his opinion: "It has the two of you in conversation discussing its artistic value. Sirs, by that alone, it is art."
Art reflects and perpetuates wisdom culturally and generationally. By connecting with art, we acquire new perspectives and connect with human experiences and stories that time and again transcend spoken or written language. In this sense, art is a form of language. A visual language that often tells a story.
Not all creative works are artistic. However, all artistic works are creative. Creativity generates new ideas. Artistry expresses those ideas in a stimulating and compelling manner.
What is bad art? What is designated as bad art is highly subjective. There are no rules, except those of the observer. In general, bad art does not evoke an emotional response. The observer does not connect.
Art is ageless. As its creator advances in years to eventually shuffle off this mortal coil, their creation is immortalized. In a sense, their creative inspiration is reborn with every generation of admirers. This is their epitaph by which they will be remembered everlastingly to inspire others.
Compared to art, life is ephemeral. Art is timeless and enduring. Like offspring, art imparts to the artist immortality.
Art can be nonsense, as long as it appeals to our senses. That is the artistry in the artist.
Impressionism was an art movement. Art has, does, and will always move us by impressing us.
